Personal development and having more time is a frequently heard resolution. One that I would like to applaud. At the beginning of every year, around the end of the first month, I ask people how far they are with their New Year's resolutions. Or it works. Whether they have already made progress. I usually get feedback that someone has fallen back into their old pattern.
Very understandable in itself. Persisting in a change requires a lot of effort and perseverance is simply difficult. Old patterns lurk and before you know it you're doing 'it' as usual again. But what many people do not realize enough is that not only perseverance is a factor of attention, but also starting. Because how do you start? A suitable approach is the engine of your success. Also realize that real change takes time. And that personal development does not happen from one moment to the next.
A good start to making a change sustainable is determining why this is so important to you. What do you want to get out of it? Moreover, it is good to reflect on your own core values. What are you good at? What do you need to do to make sustainable change successful? Someone who has difficulty saying no needs a different approach than someone who likes to start something but finds it difficult to finish something.
Knowing where your core qualities lie helps you make the right choices in your personal development. At Kenneth Smit we can help you with this, for example by creating one personality profile. This provides immediate insight, allowing you to take immediate steps to make this year your year.

Year and step by step towards personal growth
Personal development does not begin with big leaps, but with small, consistent steps. It is about consciously reflecting on what you want to achieve and dedicating daily attention to it. For example, start by writing down three concrete goals for the coming month. Make those goals measurable: not “I want to get better at presenting,” but “I will give two presentations this month and ask for feedback.”
What many professionals underestimate is the power of reflection. Take ten minutes at the end of every week to look back. What went well? What did you struggle with? Which situations gave you energy and which drained it? By recognizing this pattern, you can make more targeted choices regarding your personal development.
The role of your environment
Your environment plays a major role in your growth. Seek out people who inspire and challenge you. A good sparring partner or mentor can make the difference between good intentions and actual change. Within organizations, we see that teams that actively invest in each other's development grow faster than teams where everyone operates in isolation.
At Kenneth Smit, we believe that personal growth and professional development go hand in hand. Whether you are working on your communication skills, leadership qualities, or commercial skills, it all starts with the willingness to invest in yourself. Our Next Generation Management training helps you make that personal growth concrete and apply it in your daily practice.
So indeed, make this year a personal year. Not by trying to change everything at once, but by consciously choosing where your attention goes. The best investment you can make is in yourself.
