From elementary school friends to business success: The entrepreneurial story of Ricardo Sturrus

In this episode of the "Smart Business" podcast, Ruud Stut talks with Ricardo Sturrus, co-founder of Vonders Detachering. It's an inspiring conversation about the courage to start at a young age, building trust, the importance of personal leadership, and how people-focused entrepreneurship leads to sustainable growth. Ricardo candidly shares his journey from a cold start in an attic to a successful organization with a close-knit team and impressive clients like VolkerWessels, Heijmans, and RET.

From friendship to partnership

The foundation for their current success was laid in elementary school, where Ricardo and his partner Jeroen met. Years later, supported by their infrastructure network, they took the plunge into entrepreneurship. "We didn't have money, no fancy office, but we did have drive and confidence."

Building quality and culture

Vonders grew rapidly, but without sacrificing personal attention. "We always meet candidates in person. We want to know who someone is and what they're truly looking for," says Ricardo. Internally, the focus is also on people, with a monthly review cycle in which employees are assessed on KPIs and core values. "Growth ambition is in our DNA."

The power of directness

Vonders has a culture of openness and direct feedback. "Everyone can speak to each other if something could be improved. Toon makes the music, but we do expect you to develop yourself." Ricardo demonstrates that directness and humanity go hand in hand if you're willing to engage in conversation.

Growth through structure and feeling

While Ricardo initially worked primarily hands-on, his role is now shifting towards strategic client management and leadership. Reflection has taught him that investing in structure earlier would have been beneficial. Yet, his personal style remains unchanged: "I believe in conversation. Everything starts with a good conversation."

Smart entrepreneurship = believing in what you do

When it comes to the key to success, Ricardo stays true to himself: "You have to believe in it. In your company, your people, your customers. Only then can you make a difference." His tip for aspiring entrepreneurs? "Work hard, but work smart. And trust the power of focus and humanity."
