Cohesion stands for the connection between individuals. In short, exactly what makes or breaks a team! We find cohesion in a team that is happy and optimistic about its chances. That is focused on collaboration and adopts a mature and professional attitude towards team members, customers and relations. Such cohesion gives your team, your customers and your business associates a major advantage compared to working with teams that are divided and in competition with each other.

As a team leader, it is your job to remove cohesion barriers. For example, by protecting the team culture and values ​​on which the collaboration is built. Always avoid negativity in your team. A cynic, critic, lazy or burned-out employee is disastrous for cohesion. And also make sure that no 'cocktail' culture or excessive competition arises. Not even in sales teams. Cohesion is king, the key to success!

Divide roles based on quality

To achieve maximum performance you must have the right people in the right place. For you as a leader, this is one of the most important tasks, for which you must have an enormous dose of people skills. In addition, this also requires insight how people are put together.

A good leader knows the qualities of his team members and deploys them where they can do their best! That takes time. The thinking pattern must be examined, as well as what is needed to motivate your people to help them excel! Make sure that you do not include multiple people with similar roles/personalities in your team, unless you really need this from a capacity perspective.

Hire for potential

New employees, or newcomers to your team, are often recruited based on their resume and proven past experience. Do you want to optimally shape your team and achieve perfect cohesion? Then you may have to select less on the basis of profile and experience, and more on the potential of your candidates. Look for staff who have the potential to grow beyond expectations! Eager, eager to learn and demanding. As a team leader, you can then provide the resources and guidance to teach the newcomers the skills they need!

Reward the team, not the individual

Especially within sales organizations, individuals are often rewarded. To achieve targets, for example. However, try applying rewards to the entire team! Organizations that work with team rewards often see a large increase in cohesion, with employees who have already achieved their targets helping other colleagues, so that the team target is ultimately achieved. Could there be a better example of cohesion and a better way of team building?

Celebrate successes

Finally, what is often forgotten, celebrate successes! In the rush of the day, we often ignore our team achievements without batting an eyelid. This often happens in sports, for example. 'We have won this great prize, but there is no time for celebration, we are looking forward'. Shame! We must reflect much more often and in more detail on achievements that increase team cohesion. After all, that's what we do it for!
